Looking the cooler from the bottom gives a good idea of its structure, there are two heatsink towers with 4 heat pipes running through them, and the 120 mm fan is seated between these two towers. The TIM comes pre-applied to the base, which makes the installation very simple.

The base of the Xtreme Rev.2 is pure copper and while it isn't polished to mirror finish, it's still straight and good enough to provide a proper contact with the IHS.

The fan assembly is held in place with plastic clips, so removing it is a tool-less process. With the fan out of the way one can see the serrated edges of the fins, which should help with the airflow. While the cooler is designed for the special fan it comes with, it is possible to install a normal 120x25 mm fan in the gap, so long as you can come up with a method of mounting it.
