At the right end of the function keys there's a special F-key which turns the F-keys into shortcuts and on top of the numpad there are buttons for volume up/down, mute and sleep. I'm a heavy user of media keys, and would have wished to see also play/pause and next track, but the volume controls are better than nothing. There's no led for the scroll-lock, instead of that Arctic has decided to use the third light to show if the F-key is pressed.
In use
The keys are two millimeters thick and three millimeters apart.
This is the first island-type keyboard I've used for any longer period of time, so it was interesting to see how it feels. Despite the short travel of the keys, the typing touch is very smooth. It's also pleasingly quiet to use. The only nag I have about the feel is that the edges of the keys are a bit sharp, which feels unpleasant if you don't hit the keys at the center and feel the edges of the nearby keys.
Conclusion
Overall the K381 turned out to be a very nice keyboard. The MSRP of this board is 17,45 €, which is a bit of a bargain and makes it all the more tempting. The compact size and nice typing touch are the two main points, no doubt about it, but I think it also looks pretty good. Sure, an aluminum version would look even better, but for the price this isn't half bad. The only detail I wasn't pleased with is that the corners of the keys could be a bit more rounded to avoid the unpleasant feeling when missing the keys. |
