Special Ops

Beside the usual single player and multiplayer modes the MW2 also offers special ops missions that you can run both alone and with a mate. Some of these missions are parts of the single player campaign, but there are also plenty of specially made missions, so the Special Ops really offers some extra value to the package. The missions come with time limits and based on the time or score you can get different ratings and after getting enough stars you'll unlock even more missions. IW has also announced plans of new spec. ops missions in the future, but ofcourse the DLC will cost extra.
Multiplayer
The MW2 multiplayer is by and far the most controversial bit of gaming in quite a while. First IW promised a classical CoD-style multiplayer system with dedicated servers, just like in all the earlier games. Anyway just weeks before the launch Infinity Ward heavily swung the axe on the MP-aspect of the game and announced the game will work in IWnet. Well and truely connected to Steam it's a peer-to-peer system with no real servers. This also means no mods, no server settings and maybe most importantly no admins. Now I.m personally an avid CoD-player and been into the series ever since the original Call of Duty and I was very disappointed by the news.

The P2P-system running on Steamworks and some of the reasons IW gave for the new system included that it would help get rid of the cheaters in the game and prevent piratism as the players with cracked game couldn't play online. Obviously none of these goals were achieved, all the cheats were available the day after launch, pirates are happily playing online, console has been enabled and dedicated servers are on the way. So the whole new multiplayer system is starting to look an awful lot like what's commonly referred to as an "Epic failure".
Anyway with the mandatory rant out of the way, let's see what the multiplayer itself can offer and what's new from the actual gameplay point of view.

First thing you get after launching the game is obviously the main menu, but after that you choose the game mode, that's all. After choosing what mode you want to play (and there are plenty to choose from), the system automatically finds other players for you to play with. Unfortunately you can't choose the map you want to play and neither do you see the pings of the other players. Another nag here is that there's no "ready"-button seen in some other games and the wait can sometimes be rather long.
While waiting for the match to start you can create custom classes. The system here works very much like in the first Modern Warfare - you first need to reach a certain level to unlock any given weapon and then you can choose it in the create class-menu. Beside the huge variety of firearms there are also plenty of additional add-ons you can slap on your weapon of choice. Overall then, the weapon-aspect of the game is nicely taken care of.
