Installation

Mounting bits

Like Sytrin's cooler, Thermalright's unit is also compatible with almost all graphic cards in market. Product comes with two manuals, first one explains installation in general and second one tells two more detailed stages for GF6600 and GF6800 GT. There are so many different mounting parts in six separate bags that a careful read through of the mounting guide is a necessity. With nVidia's 6600 being the test card I had to use the silicon cushion pad as 6600's core has no shield of any kind. Installation without this pad would be a really, really bad idea.

First phase in installation is to select right arm plates according to the manual and install them with the longer screws. Be sure you remember to put the washers between the card and the screw and that you put the arm plates right side up. Also remember to put the washers between the screw and the VGA-card. After the plates are installed, it's time to screw them in place and align the retention mount.

This is when I started having problems. The retention mount is not that thick so it bends quite easily. I hope Thermalright will do something to improve this in their next model because this causes the biggest difficulties in the assembly.

Almost there...

After the retention mount is in place and the screws tightened, it's time for the memory heatsinks. Here comes a problem again. The heatpipes go over just above two memory chips so heatsinks can't be mounted on them. This will affect the cooling of these memory chips somewhat but I don't believe it will matter that much as the card comes without ramsinks from the factory.

Ramsinks and retention mount assembled so it is time to spread some thermal paste over the GPU and then carefully slide the cooler in place and tighten the four screws. Here comes the problem that bent retention mount caused, screws aren't long enough to get into threads. When this happens, you can either get longer screws or loosen the retention mount screws a bit. All together Thermalright's mounting isn't nearly as easy as either Arctic Cooling's or Sytrin's.

Installed

After almost one hour of struggling, the cooler is finally installed! After the installation was complete, I understood what the statement of "rear heatsink to the VGA card" actually ment. There's a gap of only few millimeters from the fins to some of the components on the GFX board. Even while this looks pretty hazardous, it should not cause any troubles as the heatpipes make the structure relatively stiff.
