BenchmarkFlash memories can be written over and over again 10,000 to 1,000,000 times, depending on the quality. Not having the time (or the will) to destroy a few flash memories, I skipped this test. These figures are hardly found on the manufacturer's pages, so you'll just have to rely your luck on Google, if you want those figures out. This leaves us with read/write speeds. |

Benchmark resuls
Here we have the Lexar JumpDrive Sport 1 GB, Buffalo ClipDrive 128 MB and SanDisk Ultra II 1 GB. The Lexar and Buffalo are memory sticks, while the SanDisk is a CompactFlash card - just to give perspective. All the tests were done via an USB2.0-port. The devices were fed 4 MB of data in chunks of 0.5 to 1024 KB. As you can see, the read speeds were identical with the USB sticks, while the Lexar was a bit faster writing. The SandDisk, used in high speed DSLR-cameras, was unsurprisingly out of both stick's leagues.
It would take about 15.5 minutes to read or 17 minutes to write the whole stick in one sweep with USB2.0, given that the FAT-formatted stick is reported as 939 MB (1 037 320 192 bytes). That said, I wonder about the specs stated by Lexar: 8 MB/s read, 6 MB/s write, because that really isn't going to happen. I'm thinking that they really meant 8 Mb/s and 6 Mb/s, which makes a lot more sense.
Conclusion
PROS CONS |
Before the 1 GB Lexar I was stuck with a 128 MB Buffalo, which at times seemed too small. Sure, it was more than ample for carrying documents and stuff like that, but very cramped to carry anything bigger. Now, I'll be able to walk around with my documents, few favourite music tracks, one movie and some applications to do it all with - all in my pocket. I don't know about you, but I think that's neat! |
