iBASE is the first manufacturer to introduce ATi's RS300M chipset to Mini-ITX form factor. Clear advantage provided by this move is the greatly improved graphics performance over the previous technologies. Combined with 5.1 sound support the motherboard can be used for many multimedia applications, for example as gaming platform or DVD movie station. Support for four IDE devices and two SATA drives offers many possibilities to use the motherboard as a file server. Top this all with the power of the latest Intel P4 processors and you can use this board as a CAD station or simulation platform. As you can see the possibilities are almost endless. And all this in 17x17 cm package!

Small dimensions call for good planning. Connectors need to be accessible and still you need to have enough room for proper cooling and power circuitry. P4 heatsink mounting bracket seems huge compared to VIA's C3 solutions but as you can see, even the underside of the heatsink will be populated by more than just a processor. Also the bottom side of the motherboard is used to house larger chips like Silicon Image's SataLink. Everything is tightly packed but still it all seems well organized and thought out.

It is quite amazing that we still prefer these big ATX and in future BTX form factors. Sure, they offer up to six PCI connectors and possibility to upgrade your GFX adapter but those things doesn't matter at all to most users. Not all are hunting for that latest X800 GFX card or need to hook up that top quality sound card at the same time when they need a TV-tuner card. I believe that these new powerfull Mini-ITX setups will get noticed but for them to get really popular at home would need advances on case design and marketing in general. Shuttle, Soltek, ABIT etc. have introduced their versions of small computer systems so hopefully we can see something similar happening to the Mini-ITX in the future.
