The Motherboard

The motherboard

Modular design continues on the motherboard too. On the left one can spot a slot for the hdd cage backplate. Top part has a slot for memory module. In this sample the module was Kingmax's 128 MB DDR-400. On the right we have all the leds in one tidy package to be plugged in onto the motherboard. And finally on the bottom we can spot the mini-PCI connector that can house a WLAN adapter. Compatibility list for supported WLAN adapters can be found from Thecus product pages.

CPU

The chip that acts as brains for the unit is an Intel IOP 80219. Clocked at 600 MHz it should provide more than enough processing power and not to become the bottle neck. On the other hand, N2100 needs every bit of processing power available as the RAID is software controlled. 80219 supports memory capacity up to 1 GB with ECC so there are ways to improve the product further with future firmwares if needed as the hardware allows easy expansion as it is.

Support chips

There are some important auxiliary chips added to the motherboard. SiL3152 - PCI to 2 Part SATA150 controller handles all interfacing with the hard drives. Pair of RTL8110SBs are used to communicate with the outside world via two gigabit ethernet connectors.
