Benchmarks

This time I used two very popular testing softwares for synthetic tests and also a stop watch technique for real life performance measurements. All tests were ran several times to see what is the average performance of the drives. There were some interesting readings coming from the Readout Device so lets see what we can make out from them.

First up is the HD Tune that is more widely used to measure hard drive performance. It also offers temperature measurements but naturally USB devices are not equipped to offer such information.

HD Tune

X-Micro 512 MB

Kingston DTE Privacy 256 MB

Corsair Readout 1 GB

Average transfer rate for all drives is more or less equal, around 10 MB/s. Corsair takes the top spot when talking about Burst Rates. If you look closely on those yellow Access Time readings, things start to get interesting. Readout is way slower than others when it comes down to finding stuff fast from the drive. But remember that this is only a synthetic test and may not reflect the real life performance all that well.

Sandra 2 MB Files Test

Readout is left the last when you look at the Combined Index. Read performance was there but the writing and deleting speeds were noticeably lower.

Real Life Write Performance

In this test I made a file copy with a file sized at 73.3 Megabytes. Copy was made from the SATA hard drive to the USB device.

X-Micro7.28 s
Kingston DTE
Privacy Edition
5.48 s
Corsair ReadOut8.73 s

In a real life situation the Readout performs like any other USB Flash Device. The display updated the available space on the drive around one second after I started the copy process. This momentarily slowed down the file transfer but after that the speed was constant. I see no reason why you shouldn't get this drive because of its performance compared to other USB Flash drives.

    "Innovation Award"

It seems that one have to have screen and displays everywhere. Funny for me to say that as some nutty recentlyinstalled one inside a computer mouse.

It is great to see more and more innovative products coming out. For a while it looked like the USB Flash Devices were to remain as they have been for a long time. Corsair broke the mold and brought something new to the table. This is something I love about Corsair as they are not afraid to toy around with new ideas.

It will be interesting to see how well this new idea gets adopted by other manufacturers. Perhaps we start to see similar displays embedded with for example portable hard drives or memory cards. For now, Readout remains to be the device to have if one wants such a display. But for those that do not value the screen that much, remember that the Readout also works as a regular USB Storage Device.
