ICE Cooling

ICE

ICE diagram
Cooling in SB62G2 is based on the ICE system like the most/all of the Shuttle's barebones. System contains three basic building blocks and they are the CPU heatsink, four heatpipes and the radiator with a fan. Heat from the CPU causes the liquid inside the heatpipes to vaporize and carry the heat energy up the tubes to the radiator. Radiator is located just behind the blowhole at the back of the case and this allow efficient removal of heat energy from inside the case. Fan of the ICE system serves dual purpose because it also removes hot air generated by the other components inside the case. As you will see from our overclocking results this cooling method is really powerfull and can handle high loads easily.

Cooler
Radiator, heatpipes and the CPU heatsink are all packaged together. This makes the installation easier and improves the efficiency of the cooler. Heatsink is made out of aluminum but there is a relatively thick copper base that makes the physical contact with the CPU core. Heatsink may seem small but because it isn't used as the regular cooler the physical dimensions doesn't need to be that large. It has to be just big enough to absorb the heat energy coming from the core and heat the heatpipes with it.

Smooth surface
Copper base was really smooth and had no scratches. This ensures the best possible contact with the CPU core with the less amount of thermal grease. High quality product all the way.

ICE fan
Fan speed is controlled from the motherboard. The fan itself is made by Sunon (KD1208PTB1) as you can see from the image. It is rated to max. 3000 rpm and 39.5 CFM with 33 dBA of noise. Ball bearing ensures long operating life. If you don't like this fan and want to replace it, you can use almost every 80x80 mm fan for it. Fans with leds should be usable too but the brightness of the leds will vary with the speed of the fan if there isn't separate power feed for them.
You noticed those two holes on the top part of the image? Fan housing is kept in place with four thumbscrews from the back of the case. Because the fan housing is installed on top of the radiator part of the ICE system, it will keep the whole assembly from moving while you are carrying the SB62G2 to a LAN party etc.

Clip

Easy to use
Clip for ICE has to be one of the most functional retention clips ever designed. Clip has a large area where you can press while sliding the hooks in place and everything is done without tools. Clip produces a nice amount of pressure againt the CPU core so it will make perfect contact againt the copper base of the cooler.

Active cooling on chipset
865G chipset is cooled by a fairly large heatsink and a fan. Perhaps this active cooling contributed to our excellent overclocking result but for those that are seeking for a silent system this little fan could get bit annoying after some time. It can be removed and the unit should be able to function normally if not overclocked, though this procedure will void the warranty.
