Installation

Initially the idea was to install the Battle-Axe to the XFX 8800GTS Alpha Dog card as it uses the Nvidia's reference cooler, but there was a problem with the memories. The heatpipes of the cooler are so close to the two memory chips there's no room for memory heatsinks. This problem could be solved by modifying the memory heatsinks a bit, but we decided to use another card instead.

Gainward's 8800GT Golden Sample features a very slim heatspreader for the memories so the original memory cooling solution was used instead of the Xigmatek's heatsinks. This solved the installation issue on the memory front, but on the Gainward 8800GT there's a high heatsink on the power supply components that only barely cleared the edge of the Battle-Axe. For such a large cooler these issues are somewhat surprising. According to Xigmatek the Battle-Axe isn't actually compatible with the G92 8800-series cards, but as shown here, it fits nicely to some of the cards.

Despite the issues the cooler was finally installed to the card. Without compability issues the installation itself is an easy process with only following steps:
- 1. Two brackets are mounted to the base of the cooler with four screws
- 2. Four small spacers are screwed to the brackets
- 3. Card is placed on top of the cooler and four spring-loaded grommets are secured
The installation is very similar to many other VGA-coolers out there and it does the job well.

The cooler is really large and with the card they require four card slots. Not SLI-compatible by any means. The heatpipes and fans also overlap the card sidewise, so the Battle-Axe isn't suitable for HTPC- and other slim cases.
