Yamada H8420

Silver grey aluminium speakers are quite impressive. Dense metal front grating is removable. Speakers are heavy despite of their small overall dimensions, big shielded magnets and massive aluminium body surely add to their weight.

Inside

Unfortunately speakers have plastic covers, which are loosely attached to the aluminum bodies. So speakers are not airtight but fortunately covers are stiff and I did experience any disturbing resonance while testing them. Speaker elements are attached to body by four screws and rubber gaskets is putted between elements and body to prevent resonance.

Dyna

There are two "Dyna" 2.75" 10W speaker elements per speaker and they are naturally magnetic shielded. Slight padding is also visible on the picture. I can not find anything major to complain about (construction, implementation or appearance) at this price. Perhaps 2.75" speakers are little too small because great deal of low frequencies have to be produced through subwoofer.

Terminal

Sticker on the back indicates the speaker's place on system although it doesn't really matter since they all are identical. In addition to that there are also fast clips for speaker cables, which can take about ~0,75mm² cables. Hole for wall fastening are also provided.

Subwoofer:

Technical specifications:

Element:6,5"
Power:40 W (RMS)
Size:230x420x340 mm
Impedance:4 Ohm
Frequency response:35 Hz-?
Magnetic shielding:No
Input:Cables ~0,1 mm²
Material:Wood

Yamada H8420 Subwoofer/amplifier

Subwoofer/amplifier unit is made from MDF-board and it is actually quite massive compared to other speakers. It really seems that subwoofer is most important speaker of this system since it has to produce LFE-channel and also big slice of low frequency sounds that other speakers can't actually produce. Bass reflex type case is not as big as overall dimensions indicate because there is an isolated space inside for some components of amplifier.

Element

Subwoofer's crossover frequency is not adjustable, which is unfortunate since it could have been a useful feature. High volumes can cause booming sound easily if crossover frequency is too high and we are going to inspect this matter more closely on next page.

Amplifier:

Yamada H8420 in- and outputs

Six channel amplifier is build inside the subwoofer box. Amplifier has analog 5.1 and also analog 2.0 inputs. Front, back and middle speaker outputs provide each 15W (RMS) whereas subwoofer gets 40W (RMS). Output levels are adjustable but there is no separate balance adjustment.

Remote controller

Amplifier is fully controllable by remote controller, which is also best way to adjust all the settings. There are even some settings that could not be found on subwoofer/amplifier box, so remote controller is mandatory. Adjustable settings are 2.0/5.1 input, channel balance, mute, virtual 5.1 mode and of course main volume. Nice looking remote controller fits like a glove in my hand and feels quite enduring. Batteries are not included.

Led show

Subwoofer/amplifier unit has an interesting detail; blue, shining circle. There are several named green leds at the chrome edge. Leds indicate which input is in use, which speaker is under adjustment, volume level and if virtual 5.1 is on. In normal 5.1 operation mode these leds flash in sequences, forming many kinds of patterns and combinations.
