Usage

So, what programs one can control with the SpaceNavigator? Currently there are over 100 applications that has a native support for the 3DConnexion controllers. The Windows platform is the most supported one but the key 3D programs in other OS, like Linux are supported too.

For me, Google Earth and Google SketchUp have been the most important ones. They both are supported by the SpaceNavigator and boy, does the 3D controller improve the usability of them both. One can literally fly around the globe in the Google Earth. It is so easy to zoom around the maps and pan from place to place. I spent hours on GE when I received the SpaceNavigator for a review. Same happened with the SketchUp. It is so easy to move from point to point, angle to angle and build new models.

Lights

There seem to be no end to the invasion of the blue leds. Luckily, the control panel application can be used to turn the lights off.

Conclusion

PROS
  • Very intuitive to use
  • Price of the PE model
  • SDK available
  • Multiple OS support

  • CONS
  • Not for everybody
  • Only two buttons
  • Award

I just love this. It is something that every 3D designer should have. It improves the navigation inside the models so much. This makes the job more enjoyable but also more efficient. It is hard to describe a feeling that is like: "This is THE thing that has been missing from my input device selection". But, there is always a but... I like the controller so much, that I would like to be able to use it everywhere - While browsing the net, while controlling Winamp and even when writing some boring revie... I mean documents.

For more advanced user the PE model may feel bit limited as it only offers two customizable buttons. One has to remember that this is the basic model from the 3DConnexion's product lineup. More advanced models like the SpacePilot and the SpaceExplorer offer far more control options. For example the 21 speed keys in the SpacePilot may take the need for keyboard input away completely for certain applications.

A must product for a 3D geek but perhaps not so much for the average Joe. Sure, one can fly around the Google Earth in whole new way but that might not be enough reason to spend money on this. I just know that I'll not be giving this away from my desktop unless it would be replaced by some more advanced model. I'm hooked.
