When you look at the numbers it is clear the 8800 GTX will have a hard time on keeping up with this card. When you take the price in concideration, the GT is already starting to look like a winner. One might wonder what are the motives on nVidia camp to make their new product so fast but still keep such a low price tag. ATI's new 38xx lineup must be one of the reasons but the recent benchmarks on them show that they will not challenge the GT when it comes to performance.


As the GPU-Z indicates, the G92 is based on the new 65nm manufacturing technology. As the older G80 contained around 681 million transistors the new technique allowed nVidia to utilize the space bit better and to use over 750 million transistors. Thinner traces also mean lower power requirements and that is the thing many of us have been waiting for. Watercooling is nice but personally I try to avoid using it on my own setups. With 8800GT, the need for more powerful cooling isn't any higher than with the previous models. In fact, we stepped further away from that road.
G92 is also the first GFX chip that complies with the PCI Express 2.0 standard. The most important thing that the new standard offers is the bandwidth of 5 gigabits per second between the GFX part and the rest of the system.
8800GT

On the back side we have a set of 12 screws that keep on the cooling solution. Other than that, the back side of the card is pretty non-interesting.

Cooler of the 8800GT is made out of aluminum. Part that will make the physical connection with the GPU core is covered with copper. Thermal connection between the memory chips and the power components are enchanced by using thermal pads.
As the new manufacturing technology allows smaller cooler to be used on the card, the 8800GT solution only takes up one PCIE slot. While it may sound ideal at first, the coin still has the other side. Hot air generated by the card is not pushed out from the case as with the previous models. Now the hot air will travel between the aluminum cooler and the black steel cover towards the forward part of the case. This makes the need of functional case cooling even more important.
As the power requirements are lowered from the previous models, there is only one six pin power connector. This also affects the rest of the power handling circuitry by making it smaller.

Memory on the 8800GT is manufactured by Qimonda and it is rated to 1ns ( 1000 MHz ). 8800GT reference design uses these chips at the rate of 900 MHz but on the XFX's Alpha Dog, the memory side is already clocked up to 975 MHz. This doesn't leave that much room for further overclocking.

On the left we have the video connector. The same connector can be used to push both the S-Video signal and HDTV material via the bundled components cable adapter. Next to this we have two DVI connectors offering the maximum resolution of 2560x1600.
